Repair and Replace for Added Security

HomeRepair and Replace for Added Security

You might think that your home is pretty secure and you pay close attention to security. However, there are always times when a lapse in concentration or not having the time for that repair job results in our homes not being quite as burglar-safe as we like to think. There are some important areas of our homes that we shouldn’t neglect because they may just be an invitation to a very unwelcome guest.

Side Gates

Vulnerable areas of properties include side and back gates where burglars can sneak through and might not be overlooked. Homes that back onto alleyways or fields can also be vulnerable so you might want to consider some form of fencing or security measures for extra peace of mind. Motion-activated lights are another great deterrent as nobody wants a light shone directly on them when they’re up to no good! Signs of a security alarm, whether real or fake, will also put burglars off. After all, they don’t know the cameras aren’t watching them!

Garages

Most opportunistic burglars don’t even have to work very hard. They often walk straight into properties through unlocked windows and garage doors! If you want to keep windows open in nice weather then think about locking screens. Ensure that your garage door is sturdy and has a good locking mechanism. A weak door can be forced to gain entry and if your garage door is old or in a damaged state then it’s even more vulnerable to someone attempting to gain access.

Windows

Windows are often overlooked by homeowners as we tend to focus on whether the doors are locked. Even if we remember to shut them before going out or going to bed, have we locked them? Older houses also tend to have weaker windows and frames which makes it easier for burglars to break in. It’s essential to repair or replace broken frames and you could do this with a local company such as Double Glazing Cheltenham.  If not then invest in improved locks that can clearly be seen from outside to deter would-be thieves.

Front Door

You may laugh at this one but you’d be amazed at how many opportunistic burglars simply walk right through the front door of a house. If you have overgrown shrubs, potted plants or trees near to the house, you could be making a useful shady, shelter for a burglar to hide. If you feel your door is not visible enough from the street then add some additional lighting, paint the door a bright color and put up security stickers or signs about dogs and alarm systems. All this might be just enough to make them think twice about bothering with your property after all!

French Doors

A glamorous addition to any home but all that glass does represent a weakness. It can be surprisingly quiet to smash one small pane of glass in a French door and reach in to unlock it. Some older sliding doors can even be opened with a screwdriver! The solution for sliding doors is to fit a metal pole into the track so the door cannot be opened even if the lock is broken.
